Workforce Training: Deja Vu Soviet Style

Ed. Note:  Apparently the state legislator I referenced in this article  and suggested that he and some of his colleagues take a “crash course in political philosophy” has received a PhD in Political Philosophy.  I can certainly understand his dismay with my comment, but it is simply another evidence that our education system has misinformed and dumbed-down several generations.

It was not my intent to offend him.  It is my intent to speak truthfully and to share the many years of research I’ve given to this subject.  One of the commenters on his Facebook page suggested that I needed to take freshman English.  Actually, I attended a private college prep school, Marlborough School for Girls in Los Angeles, along with some very well-educated friends, including Tricia and Julie Nixon.  My college freshman English class at BYU was more reminiscent of my 9th grade English class at Marlborough. 

I do not ask anyone to blindly believe my positions on the issues.  I ask them to listen and then to prove me wrong.  I’ve also asked this legislator to join me in a public debate and to name the time and place.  No response.  Yet. 

One of Utah’s state legislators is making some statements that show how uninformed he is or that he truly is a marxist.  Either way, if the majority of our elected officials do not take a crash course in political philosophy, we are going to continue on this crash course to our own destruction.

Recently I received a text from a long-time friend in Connecticut who had immigrated from the Soviet Union asking for some help.  She needed to home school her daughter.

During a two hour phone conversation, she shared with me what she sees as the parallels between her experience growing up under communism and becoming a Russian athletic champion and what she sees in the United States as a citizen.

What I grew up understanding about communism was really much different from what she described. For me it had that “angry” face shouting at us: “We will bury you!”

But she put it in a different context.  She said, “The Soviet government was simply a huge bureaucracy of unelected boards, commissions, councils.  Business was in bed with government, which opened the door for government take over – eventually by force.  They allowed churches to remain, but you were not allowed to speak about religion in public settings.  They put surveillance on us, tracking us.  Now we have sophisticated technology to do that.  [NSA, computers and databases] The main difference between the former U.S.S.R. and the U.S. today is that the U.S. still has some Freedom of Speech and Gun Rights. When those rights are gone, they will be at your door.  If this unelected bureaucratic system continues to grow at this present rate, it won’t be long. If this health care plan is funded, I give it only a matter of months.”

What she sees in her concerns for the government-funded schools (including charters and private schools/colleges receiving federal and state subsidies) is the push for aligning the workforce with education, and the collaboration between the private and public sectors. It’s the unfair competition between the private and public schools, plus the Leftist curriculum.

She was deeply concerned about these trends, all too familiar to her.  Then a Utah State Representative – Kraig Powell – advocated on his Facebook page for those same policies she abhors and about which she warns:

“As a taxpayer, I don’t want my dollars going to public schools unless those schools are focusing on getting kids ready for jobs and the work force. Most of our country’s founders were not products of a public education system and they had different goals for their own classical education, and leisure time to pursue those goals (philosophy, government, law). I want the schools in my world to do everything they can to train the students to be ready to get a job in the modern workplace, and to expose them to those career and job skills now. Most of the skills that need to be taught in K-12 public schools to prepare students for the work force are essentially just literacy and numeracy, and those can and will continue to be taught by studying classical works (as my own kids are doing to the hilt now under Utah’s Common Core standards, based on my own personal experience reading The Scarlet Letter and other works together with them this year). But if we don’t make sure that these foundational language and math classes are aligned to the workplace and producing the skills needed in the work force, then I think we are wasting precious taxpayer dollars. By using terms such as ‘centrally planned economy,’ many critics of Common Core make it sound like our U.S. Chamber of Commerce, by endorsing Common Core, is advocating moving our country to socialism. But of course that is not the case. Private businesses recognize that a large reason for the success and ascendancy of the United States on the world stage in the past century has been careful government planning and regulation (roads and transportation infrastructure, banking systems, stock market regulation, etc.). Central government planning is not inconsistent with free-market capitalism — in fact, I would argue it is essential for its endurance, if the U.S. wants to continue to be the leader on the world stage. For me, it is all about finding the right balance between government management and individual liberty. I think the minimal educational guidelines being implemented as Utah’s Common Core strike that proper balance and do not in any way endanger an individual’s liberties to pursue in this great country whatever she or he wishes to in life — in fact, the standards are an aid to help individuals more fully exercise and realize those individual freedoms of self-expression. Thanks for weighing in.”

This display of utter ignorance is not just tragic. It’s downright frightening. He needs to have a conversation with my Soviet immigrant friend.  Elected officials who vote for these policies must be called what they are, whether they realize it or not: Representative Kraig Powell is an advocate of marxist policies.

Sadly, he is not alone.  The majority of the Utah legislature has advocated the same, as has the Salt Lake Chamber and even the Governor’s office.  In Utah!  It’s in your state as well, friends.  These are good people in their private lives, to be sure.  I know many of them.  I sincerely hope they do not know what they are doing.

Utah’s governor was quite disturbed that I would tweet about him, and suggest that he was supporting an agnostic socialist who is funding billions for education reform, but it was the truth.  I explained that I knew him to be a good man, but probably he did not realize what he was doing.

He asked to meet with me and then weeks later criticized me for not doing so.  However, what he may not know is that I have been unsuccessfully trying to make that appointment with him for several months now, but his scheduler has not responded.  That seems unusual because I have had a friendly open-door to the governor on other issues in the past.

School-to-Work/Workforce Training in Motion
One of Utah’s top two papers, the Deseret News, placed a story on the front page, describing Southern New Hampshire University’s College for America as a futuristic trend – to dump in-person classes and grades and replace them with online learning and certificates of mastery for workforce training.

Those of us who have been researching these concepts and know who the people are behind these “innovations” will tell you that, no, there’s nothing inherently wrong with using technology or computers or distance learning.  There’s nothing wrong with a child learning at his own pace or not having to put in “time on task.”

But we will tell you that we also know the people creating the standards, curricula and the entire reform/restructuring movement that has been fast-tracked since 1989, and they are promoting marxist ideology.  They are using a Skinnerian approach to education using behavior modification techniques in testing and curriculum to mold students to these attitudes and values.

Understand the principle of garbage in-garbage out.

Another article on this same topic was recently brought to my attention.  It sounds so great, unless you know that Linda Darling-Hammond is a collaborator with radicals such as Bill Ayers and Marc Tucker.  They are spearheading the common core movement and developed the international benchmarks to create what they call The Flat World and Education.  Their goal? “Equality,” redistribution of wealth and central control of education.  They are marxists.

If you wanted to promote something inherently very evil, would you put an ugly face on it?  Of course not.  You would make it as appealing as possible.  That is what is happening.

    I understand Representative Kraig Powell received his PhD in Political Philosophy. He has tweeted that I have taken a “crash course” in the same.

    I tweeted back that I am challenging him to a public debate on this subject and requested that he name the time, date and place. Not to be to boastful, but he will have a difficult time catching up to the 25+ years of my research on this topic. We must have this dialog and I welcome it. It is well beyond “common core.” His policy on education is far too destructive and his PhD degree speaks volumes about the propaganda taught in American schools.
