Thank you for your strong support for the Boy Scouts of America to encourage the organization to keep its policy in tact so that our young men will be in a safer environment. I delivered the petitions to the Boy Scout Headquarters, and they have been delivered to the Board members. Many are still coming in, and I will send the remainder by morning.

Whatever happens in the coming days, months and years for Scouting, let us hope that this nation will continue to produce young men such as this one.  Seven minutes worth your time, the story of an Eagle Scout and POW:

boy scout oath
The Boy Scout Oath
On my honor, I will do my best
To do my duty to God and my country and to obey the Scout Law;
To help other people at all times;
To keep myself physically strong, mentally awake and morally straight.

The Boy Scout Law

A Scout is:

Trustworthy,
Loyal,
Helpful,
Friendly,
Courteous,
Kind,
Obedient,
Cheerful,
Thrifty,
Brave,
Clean,
and Reverent.

The Boy Scout Motto
Be prepared!

The Boy Scout Slogan
Do a good turn daily!

The Outdoor Code
As an American, I will do my best to –

Be clean in my outdoor manners
Be careful with fire
Be considerate in the outdoors, and
Be conservation minded.

Cherilyn and sons

My four boys. Now grown men.

I raised four boys who were each involved in scouting from Wolf Scout to Eagle. All but one got his Eagle Scout Award. That one deserved it and had done everything but his Eagle Project. Some records had been lost and unretrievable amid some moves, but he’s a great young man.

I’m proud of my sons who have lived by these values. If everyone would follow these standards, the world would be a better place.

    “In tact” is spelled “intact.”

But more importantly, every major US  medical organization has rejected the myth that gay men are more likely to engage in pedophilia than straight men. Perhaps you should become more informed – and any “facts” you might pull from the Family Research Council do not count.

I spent seven years in the Boy Scouts. I began when I was in third grade and continued through my Freshman year of high school.

The best scout leader I ever had was secretly gay. The worst scout leader I ever encountered molested many boys before he was caught…and he was “straight.”

I wasn’t in the gay leader’s den but we were in the same troop. His den often went to the same summer camps and so I knew of him. I was scared of him because I was warned “that he’s a bit fruity and might try to get in your sleeping bag.” For years I dodged him. If he was holding a merit badge class or teaching a craft during summer camp I always found a way to avoid him.

When I was in eighth grade his son directed me in our junior high’s production of Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory. And thats when I really got to know his dad. And he was a great man. He was well aware of the vile rumors about his predilection for boys. But when people whisper behind your back there isn’t much you can do. Its tough to fight shadows.

The reality is that he was a gay man trying to live a straight life in the 1980’s. And that must have been hard enough. But the rumors of molestation permanently scared him and his family. And none of it was true.

When you hear FOX News claim that gays will ruin Boy Scouts think of me…I was a Boy Scout. And think of what I learned; that closeted gays are already part of Scouting. And think of the harm that came to someone I knew and respected.

Being gay has absolutely nothing to do with harming children. I’m a boy scout. I’m proud of the years I spent in scouting. And your propaganda has no place in scouting or our society. My son becomes a Tiger Scout next year. And I’ll be one of the parents fighting for equal participation of all God’s children, gay and straight.

Very sad experiences, indeed. I’m sorry that his struggle impacted you as a young boy. Read my post at Gay Rights v. Natural Family. We all come to a place of activism or passion in part because of our life experience. Being gay does have much to do with harming children especially when acted out. I hope you will seek out the research on it. I will post some as I am able.

We can love people, but that doesn’t mean we must tolerate or embrace that lifestyle. No doubt we are all God’s children, but I hope you will seek what God has written about homosexuality is an equal choice to heterosexuality.
